Claude Haiku Next Release by August 31: The Market Has Made Up Its Mind

Claude Haiku's prediction market has dropped from 52¢ to 28¢ in five days. With 21 days left, Anthropic's silence and small-model competition tell a bearish story.

The prediction market on Anthropic's next Haiku release has shed 24 cents in five days. With three weeks left on the clock and not a word from Anthropic about a new small model, the crowd is calling this one done.

TL;DR

  • YES has collapsed from 52¢ (Aug 5) to 28¢ (Aug 10, 09:57 UTC), a 24-cent drop in five days with 21 days left until the Aug 31 resolution.
  • Anthropic's recent public activity centers on Claude Code defaults, Fable 5 safety work, and chip manufacturing — not model releases.
  • Amazon Nova 2 Lite now beats Claude Haiku 4.5 on 13 of 15 published benchmarks at roughly one-quarter the price, complicating the competitive logic for a rapid Haiku refresh.
  • The NO side sits at 72¢, but a single surprise announcement would reprice the market sharply — the asymmetric risk runs both directions.

What the Market Says

We covered this market in an earlier note when YES was trading at 52¢ on August 5. Five days later, it has printed 28¢ — a move of -24 cents, with -8 cents coming in the last 24 hours alone. This is not a gradual drift. It is a repricing.

The contract resolves August 31, 2026. It requires Anthropic to ship a next model in the Haiku line — whether that is labeled 4.6, 5.0, Haiku 5, or some equivalent variant — before that date. The last Haiku release was Claude Haiku 4.5, dated October 15, 2025. That puts the gap at roughly ten months by resolution, which is long but not unprecedented for a mid-tier refresh.

Twenty-four-hour volume is $205. This is a thin market, which means individual trades can move the price meaningfully and one should not read institutional conviction into any single candle. What the aggregate price does reflect is the balance of informed guesses from people with money at stake. Right now, those people are at 28 cents YES and closing.

The Case

The silence is the story. Anthropic has had ample opportunity to signal a Haiku refresh and has not taken it. The company's visible output over the past week covers three distinct areas, none of which is a small-model release.

First, Claude Code is getting a default behavioral change on August 14: auto mode will become the standard setting for Pro, Max, and Team accounts. Anthropic says internal testing found auto mode caught 89% of harmful actions versus 13.6% for human reviewers — a material safety improvement, and the kind of polished operational detail that tends to precede a product push, not a model launch.

Second, Anthropic reported on August 7 that it is actively working on Fable 5's biology safeguards — a focus on safety work at a higher model tier, which suggests engineering attention is concentrated elsewhere.

Third, and perhaps most structurally significant, Silicon Republic reported on August 6 that Anthropic has confirmed plans to build its own AI chips amid a global shortage. Chip strategy is a multi-year capital commitment. It is not the announcement a company makes the week before it ships a routine model update.

Taken together, the public record shows a company working on developer tooling, safety layers, and hardware infrastructure. A next-generation Haiku model is not visible in any of that.

The competitive context adds a layer that may explain the strategic silence more than logistics does. According to tech-insider.org on August 8, Amazon Nova 2 Lite now matches or beats Claude Haiku 4.5 on 13 of 15 published benchmarks — a win rate of roughly 87% — and AWS prices it at least 75% below rival small models. A separate report on August 5 noted that approximately 50,000 enterprise customers are running workloads on Nova 2 at scale. That is not a beta program. That is a competing product with paying customers.

Meanwhile, Gemini 3.5 Flash ships with a 1,048,576-token context window — more than five times the 200,000-token ceiling on Claude Haiku 4.5. Context window is not the only thing that matters, but it is a number that enterprise buyers scrutinize, and Anthropic's current small-model spec trails badly on that dimension.

The uncomfortable implication is this: even if Anthropic shipped a new Haiku tomorrow, it would be entering a small-model market that has moved under it. Nova 2 Lite holds the price floor. Gemini Flash holds the context window. A Haiku 5 that is merely incremental does not recover either position. That may be precisely why Anthropic's public messaging has drifted toward Fable and higher-margin differentiated tiers — the small-model segment is where the margin compression is fiercest, and the company may be making a deliberate choice about where to compete.

If that reading is correct, the market's 28-cent YES is not a prediction of a near miss. It is the market pricing in a strategic pause that looks, from the outside, a lot like a pass.

Risks

The NO side carries real conviction at 72¢, but the case for YES deserves an honest hearing.

Anthropic has surprised market timing before. The company does not run a public roadmap in the conventional sense, and absence of a pre-announcement is not the same as absence of a release. A last-minute drop — a Haiku 4.6 with targeted improvements, or even a repositioned variant — might satisfy the contract's resolution criteria without requiring the company to have telegraphed it weeks in advance.

Internal development cycles do not map cleanly onto public messaging. A model can be ready in staging while the marketing team is occupied with something else. The chip announcement, the Claude Code changes, and the Fable safety work could all be running in parallel with a Haiku build that simply has not been announced yet.

The market's own skew creates a specific asymmetry. At 28¢ YES and 72¢ NO, any credible positive signal — a leak, a changelog entry, a developer API update — would compress the NO side quickly. The thin volume ($205 in 24 hours) means a relatively small order could reprice YES by several cents in either direction. Traders holding NO should be aware that their position is comfortable until the moment it is not.

Finally, the definition of "next Haiku model" in the contract resolution criteria may be more permissive than it sounds. If Anthropic re-releases Haiku 4.5 with an updated system prompt or a new fine-tune variant under a fresh version label, the question of whether that satisfies the market becomes a judgment call. That ambiguity, small as it is, is worth pricing.

The honest summary: the crowd at 28¢ has the better argument on current evidence, but this market does not resolve on current evidence. It resolves on what Anthropic does in the next 21 days. Those are different questions.
