Claude Haiku by August 31? The Market Says Probably Not.

The Claude Haiku by August 31 prediction market sits at 18¢ YES after a 34-cent weekly drop. Here is what the price movement means and why it matters.

TL;DR

  • The prediction market on a Claude Haiku release by August 31 is pricing YES at 18¢ as of 2026-08-11 10:00 UTC — down from 52¢ just one week ago.
  • Anthropic has released Claude Sonnet 5 and Claude Opus 5 in the past six weeks, but the low-cost Haiku tier has seen no public update.
  • A new global watermarking requirement, effective August 2, applies to all future Claude model launches and may be influencing the release sequencing.
  • With 20 days left in the month and no public roadmap for a Haiku refresh, the market's 18% confidence reads as politely skeptical.

Prediction markets have made their call on Claude Haiku: at 18¢ YES as of August 11, 2026, the crowd is giving Anthropic roughly one-in-five odds of shipping the next Haiku model before the calendar flips to September. That price has fallen 34 cents in the past week alone.

What the Market Says

The contract — "Will the next Claude Haiku model be released by August 31, 2026?" — sat at 52¢ on August 5. It closed at 28¢ the following day and has continued its descent, landing at 18¢ YES / 82¢ NO at the press-time capture of 2026-08-11 10:00 UTC.

A 34-cent weekly drawdown on a binary contract is not noise. That is a market repricing a real-world probability by nearly two-thirds in seven days. Something changed the calculus, and that something appears to be a combination of calendar math and a new compliance requirement out of Anthropic itself.

On August 2, 2026, Anthropic announced a mandatory watermarking standard for all new Claude models. According to reporting by The Decoder (August 11, 2026), the system embeds invisible text watermarks and signed metadata into Claude-generated content. The requirement is not limited to Europe despite its EU AI Act origins: "Claude models that launch in the EU on or after August 2, 2026, will ship with this labeling baked in. The requirement won't stop at EU borders either. It'll apply globally across all Claude products, including the API, Claude, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and Claude Tag."

In plain terms: any new Haiku model — whenever it arrives — will need to ship watermark-ready. Whether that adds one week or one month to an internal timeline is unknown. What the market appears to believe is that it adds more than 20 days.

The broader release cadence adds texture. Anthropic shipped Claude Sonnet 5 on June 30 and Claude Opus 5 on July 24 — a roughly three-to-four week gap between flagship tiers. If that rhythm had extended linearly downward to the smaller Haiku tier, a Haiku 5 announcement would have landed sometime in mid-to-late August. We are now past mid-August. The silence is the data point.

Anthropic's August 2026 release notes on platform.claude.ai are also telling in what they address versus what they omit. The notes confirm the retirement of Claude Opus 4.1 — "All requests to this model will now return an error. We recommend upgrading to Claude Opus 5" — suggesting the company is actively consolidating traffic onto the new flagship tier. No mention of a Haiku roadmap. Haiku does not appear to be the current operational priority.

The Case

The NO side of this trade rests on straightforward reasoning.

Anthropic has been marching down-tier, not sideways. Sonnet and Opus refreshes have consumed the company's public release bandwidth through late July. The watermarking requirement, announced August 2, adds a meaningful compliance integration step to any new model launch. And there is simply no public signal — no blog post, no changelog entry, no developer forum thread — suggesting Haiku 5 is imminent.

Haiku is the cost-optimized model: the tier that powers education tools, high-volume customer service pipelines, and anything else where inference cost matters more than raw capability. Refreshing it is strategically important, but strategically important things get delayed all the time when a company is also integrating new compliance infrastructure globally.

At 18¢, the market is not saying Haiku 5 never ships. It is saying there is an 82% probability that it does not ship in the next 20 days. That is a reasonable position given the available evidence.

Risks

The honest case for YES deserves full consideration.

Anthropic's velocity is real. Two flagship model launches in the span of 24 days in July is not a slow company. Haiku 5 could already be in the final stages of testing, with an announcement arriving any day. The market has been wrong before when it underestimated how fast Anthropic moves.

Haiku underpins cost-sensitive deployments at scale. There is a strong commercial argument for refreshing it sooner rather than later. Developer contracts, cost-per-token comparisons with competing models, and customer retention in the SMB segment all push toward an early Haiku release. Strategic urgency is not zero.

The watermarking rollout could actually accelerate a release, not delay it. If Anthropic's internal reasoning is to batch all compliant models and ship them together, the August 2 watermarking announcement could represent infrastructure completion — the runway, not the obstacle. A company that just announced global watermarking compliance may be doing so precisely because the next wave of launches is ready.

An unreleased research version of Claude was announced on August 10 for mathematical problem-solving tasks. The existence of active research releases across capability domains suggests Anthropic's model pipeline is running on multiple tracks simultaneously. Haiku 5 may be further along than the public silence implies.

None of these arguments are implausible. They are simply priced at 18¢.

The market's current read: Anthropic will launch the next Haiku model, but not before August 31. The NO position at 82¢ is a bet that 20 days is not enough runway — not that Haiku 5 is vaporware. The YES position at 18¢ is for traders who believe Anthropic has something up its sleeve and the watermarking infrastructure is already baked into an imminent release.

With no public roadmap, the next 20 days will be resolved by a changelog entry or by silence. Both are informative.
